A student mentor is a current class aged student who has participated in one or more photography classes at In-Sight, who applies to come back to a class they have already taken, and acts as an assistant to the instructors, the bridge from the student to the adults, and as a student. They truly understand both sides of the classroom. They are not the teachers, and don’t need to have all the answers. They are a knowledgeable individual and an additional source of encouragement and support for the students just starting out.
Student Mentors will:
Participate in class- be an active photographer, shoot alongside students, share your creative process.
Not be expected to pay for class.
Be a bridge- help students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing themselves. Translate between student and teacher.
Build leadership skills- practice communication, mentorship, problem solving, and responsibility in a real-world setting.
Support instructors- assist with demonstrations, help manage materials, and be an additional set of hands when needed.
Encourage peers- celebrate student work, offer positive feedback, and create a welcoming, supportive environment.
Earn community service hours- time spent as a student mentor may count towards school community service requirements.
Earn a certificate of achievement for each class mentored.
Add to your understanding of your photography, and meaningfully add to your portfolio as well as college applications.
Who can apply?
Requirements:
Have completed at least one class at In-Sight Photography Project to understand our systems, expectations, rules, etc.
Have a base knowledge of the materials in the class you are applying to mentor for.
Be enthusiastic about photography, enjoy working with others, and be ready to show up with energy, kindness and commitment.
No prior teaching experience needed- we will prepare and support you every step of the way.
Student Mentors are selected on a per-class basis. Applying does not guarantee placement but all applicants will be considered and notified.

Complete online application- fill out the application form available on the website. Tell us about your In-Sight experience, why you want to mentor, what you hope to gain from the experience, and what you hope to bring to class.
Connect with us- have a conversation with In-Sight staff to learn more about your goals and the class needs.
Get confirmed and prepared- if selected you will receive all the details about the class- dates, times, expectations and how to prepare.
Community Service Hours
Hours spent at In-Sight Photography Project as a Student Mentor during class sessions may be eligible to count toward your school’s community service requirements. In-Sight can provide documentation of your hours upon request.
